They can also spend much of their lives on dry land. Many types of turtle, especially sea turtles, frequently migrate over large distances in oceans. Turtles lay eggs which are soft and resistant. In some turtle species, temperature determines whether an egg develops into a male or a female: a higher temperature origins a female, a lower temperature origins a male. A big number of eggs are deposited in holes dug into mud or sand, covered and left to incubate by themselves. When the little turtles hatch, they find their way to the surface and go the water. There are no known species in which the mother cares for the young. Turtles don’t die of old age.
