The elephant is the largest land animal. The major types of elephants in the world are now the African
and the Asian. The Asian elephant is smaller than the African, and has rounded ears. Both of these elephants are endangered.
The Asian elephant faces the destruction of his habitat. Forests are destructed to be converted the to agricultural land. African elephants are menaced by the ivory
hunters and poachers.
The earth's changing athmosphere create also survival problems for the elephants. In the past there were many species of elephants, some bigger than the elephants still alive today. The climate changes, the taking over their environment, the ivory hunting and poaching reduced their number drastically. It will be hard to help those large and demanding animals to survive.
Many elephants have been killed
for their tusks, because
ivory is valuable to some humans, thankfully not all. The ivory trade is illegal today, but still occurs on the black market.
The elephant big ears radiate
heat to help them to keep fresh. Elephants also love water and showering by sucking water
into their trunks and spraying it on themselves. The trunk is also used to smell, breath, trumpeting, drink and grabb
things. You can hear the elephant trumpeting here, and also learn some more facts about them.
